Despatch sits between Gqeberha and Kariega on the same Algoa basin ground, with the Uitenhage Group and its sandy cover over the deeper quartzite.
Smaller stands than its neighbours, so access and where a rig can physically stand often decide the drilling position before the geology does.
What Is Under Despatch
The formations below are what a rig actually meets on a Despatch property, and between them they govern the depth, the casing requirement and what the hole will realistically give you.
| Formation | Where it sits | What it means for drilling |
|---|---|---|
| Table Mountain Group quartzite, Peninsula Formation | At depth beneath the whole basin, rising toward the Groot Winterhoek in the west | The aquifer that matters. Confined by Cretaceous siltstone and mudstone above it, which produces artesian conditions in places. Fracture-dependent, and the municipal wellfields target it several hundred metres down. |
| Uitenhage Group: Kirkwood and Sundays River Formations | The syncline between the Coega and Sundays rivers, overlying the quartzite | An aquiclude rather than an aquifer. Where sandy horizons do yield, the water is generally brackish and in places connate, so volume is not the same thing as usable water. |
| Algoa Group and Schelm Hoek dune sand | The coastal strip and the suburbs behind the beachfront | Shallow and quick. The modern dune sand is genuinely loose; the Alexandria and Nahoon Formations beneath it are consolidated calcareous sandstone and aeolianite and need casing. |

- The Coega Fault governs this basin, displacing the Cretaceous cover by an average of 550 metres and acting as a groundwater conduit in its own right. Most of the artesian boreholes lie north of it.
- Casing quality is a real issue here, not a theoretical one, because leaking and corroded casings have lost artesian water into the overlying Alexandria Formation, and holes north of Markman were sealed for affecting neighbouring artesian boreholes.
- Shallow and deep are two different products, and a quote should say which one it is for. A hole in the coastal sand and a hole targeting the quartzite are not comparable projects.
Where We Work Around Despatch
- Despatch central and the old brickfields side
- Khayamnandi and the northern approaches
- Rosedale and the Kariega boundary
- Swartkops River valley properties
- Industrial and light manufacturing sites
- Smallholdings on the outskirts
What to Watch For Here
Stand sizes are modest through much of the town, and a truck-mounted rig needs room to set up and clearance overhead. A site visit settles it in minutes and occasionally rules out the best-sited position.
The old clay and brickmaking ground means made and disturbed material in places, which affects shallow water quality and sometimes the casing requirement.
What the Water Is Used For
- Household supply where the analysis allows it
- Garden, vegetable patch and fruit trees
- Standby supply through municipal interruptions
- Stock and poultry watering on larger plots
- Reducing a monthly municipal water account
Wellpoint or Borehole?
Yes in the coastal suburbs, where Schelm Hoek dune sand extends roughly six kilometres inland, and on the Swartkops and Sundays river alluvium. Not in the Alexandria, Nanaga or Nahoon Formations, which look sandy but are consolidated and need a drilled, cased hole.
Water Quality in Despatch
Sodium-chloride water, fresher in the west toward the recharge area and increasingly saline eastward. Uitenhage Group boreholes are generally brackish and frequently unsuitable for domestic or irrigation use even where they yield well. Pollution in Kariega and Despatch is largely confined to the shallow alluvial aquifer, and heavy drought abstraction near the coast carries a seawater intrusion risk.
A water analysis is what turns that from a general expectation into a number for your specific hole, and treatment should be specified against the result rather than against the area's reputation.
Registration and Abstraction
Nelson Mandela Bay has one of the few borehole by-laws in the country that says something specific. Under the metro's Water and Sanitation Services By-Law, all borehole users must register with the City, landowners must give written notice to the Infrastructure and Engineering Directorate before sinking a new borehole, and premises using non-municipal water must display a notice board. Separately, the National Water Act governs how much you may abstract. Reasonable domestic use and small-scale garden watering generally fall under Schedule 1 and need no licence or registration, but taking more than 10 cubic metres a day from groundwater on a property must be registered, and irrigation or commercial volumes usually require registration or a water use authorisation from the Department of Water and Sanitation. We confirm the current position with the metro before drilling rather than after.

Borehole Prices in Despatch
Drilling is charged per metre, so depth drives the total. The ranges below are framed for local ground conditions and access.
| Item | Indicative range | What moves it locally |
|---|---|---|
| Drilling, per metre | R550 - R1,300 /m | Coastal sand drills fast and shallow. A hole targeting the deeper quartzite is a different undertaking entirely. |
| uPVC casing, installed, per metre | R450 - R800 /m | Screened casing and gravel pack in the sand. On an artesian hole, a properly grouted string and a sealed, controllable wellhead are not optional. |
| Mobilisation and site establishment | R2,500 - R9,000 | Access, distance and site conditions move this; a site visit settles it before quoting. |
| Water survey | R5,000 - R12,000 | Targets structure rather than depth. Worth most where yield is fracture-dependent. |
| Yield testing | R3,500 - R15,000 | Establishes the sustainable rate that pump selection depends on. |
| Pump, supplied and installed | R15,000 - R45,000 | Greater depth means more head, which means a larger pump and heavier cable. |
| Storage and booster | R12,000 - R35,000 | Needed wherever peak demand exceeds the borehole's sustainable rate. |
| Typical complete project | R90,000 - R260,000+ | Everything above, excluding treatment, which depends entirely on the water analysis. |
These are indicative ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African supplier and contractor pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not our rate card, and no figure here is a commitment.
Treat them as a broad guide only. Published borehole pricing in South Africa varies enormously - different 2026 guides quote per-metre drilling rates for the same province that differ by a factor of three - because depth, geology, access, specification, distance and fuel costs all move the number. Depth in particular is not known until the hole is finished. Figures generally exclude VAT unless noted, and change over time. Only an itemised written quote against your actual site means anything.
Despatch Borehole FAQs
Can a borehole be drilled on a small Despatch stand?
Usually, but access is the first question rather than the geology. The rig needs a route in and a working area at the drilling point, not just a spot on a plan.
Where a standard rig cannot get in, a smaller one sometimes can, at a somewhat higher rate per metre.
Is Despatch water the same as Kariega's?
The deeper aquifer system is shared, but what your specific hole gives you depends on how thick the cover is and how deep you go.
Neighbouring results are a better guide here than in most places, though still not a substitute for testing your own hole.
Can I get an artesian borehole in Despatch?
In parts of the basin water does rise under its own pressure, because the Table Mountain Group quartzite is confined beneath Cretaceous siltstone and mudstone. It is one of South Africa's most important artesian basins.
If it happens, the completion is the critical work. Leaking casings here have drained artesian pressure into the overlying formation, and some holes have been sealed for affecting their neighbours. This is not ground to finish with an open hole.
Why is some Despatch borehole water brackish?
Because the Uitenhage Group above the quartzite carries salty and in places connate water. A hole that stops in those beds can yield reasonably and still produce water you cannot use.
That is why the target formation matters more than the metres. An analysis settles what you actually have before you plumb it into anything.
