Port St Johns sits at the Mzimvubu mouth between the Gates of St John, on Msikaba Formation sandstone with alluvium along the river.

Two options on one town: fractured sandstone on the higher ground, river alluvium on the flats.

What Is Under Port St Johns

The formations below are what a rig actually meets on a Port St Johns property, and between them they govern the depth, the casing requirement and what the hole will realistically give you.

FormationWhere it sitsWhat it means for drilling
Msikaba Formation quartz areniteThe Pondoland plateau and coast from Port St Johns to BizanaThe best-performing aquifer in the province outside the Algoa basin, with several high-yielding holes setting Eastern Cape records. A Late Devonian unit roughly 185 metres thick where measured.
Dwyka Group tilliteBeneath and inland of the MsikabaRanked second locally for both yield and quality. Hard drilling, fracture-dependent.
Ecca Group shale with dolerite sheetsThe deeper and more inland parts of the sequenceThe poorest of the three. Low yields, and dolerite sheets intersected around thirty metres have given no water at all.

What That Means for Your Borehole

  • Recharge here is the best in the province, at 10 to 12 per cent of rainfall on the coast, against 2 to 7 per cent in the Karoo. That is why holes recover quickly and why this district drills well.
  • Recharge concentrates along dolerite dykes rather than in the host rock, so the dykes and the fracture zones beside them are the targets even in good sandstone.
  • Electromagnetic survey works particularly well here, and has produced excellent anomalies where dolerite dykes were the target. The survey method is not incidental on this ground.

Where We Work Around Port St Johns

  • Port St Johns town and the Mzimvubu mouth
  • Second Beach and the coastal side
  • The Gates of St John and the river gorge
  • Mthatha and Lusikisiki roads
  • Guest houses and tourism properties
  • Surrounding villages and settlements

What to Watch For Here

River-flat properties can draw shallow alluvial water, which is quick and cheap and tied closely to the river and its catchment.

The gorge sides are steep, so rig access rather than the survey often decides where a hole can actually go.

What the Water Is Used For

  • Irrigating coastal gardens and lawn
  • Rinsing salt off paving, walls and vehicles
  • Pool top-up, subject to what the analysis says
  • Standby supply through restrictions and outages
  • Keeping mature planting alive through summer

Wellpoint or Borehole?

No. This is plateau sandstone under thin soil cover, with no unconsolidated aquifer to drive a point into. The river-mouth alluvium at Port St Johns is the only marginal case.

Water Quality in Port St Johns

Water quality follows the same ranking as yield: Msikaba and Dwyka water is rated acceptable, while Ecca Group water is mostly poor to unacceptable. Quartz arenite water is typically soft and low in dissolved solids, with iron from the hematite-cemented horizons the common nuisance. High rainfall and shallow water tables mean bacteriological testing belongs on the list.

A water analysis is what turns that from a general expectation into a number for your specific hole, and treatment should be specified against the result rather than against the area's reputation.

Registration and Abstraction

Groundwater itself is regulated nationally rather than municipally, and we could not find a published borehole by-law for this district municipality. As the water services authority it can still require approval before a property draws on an alternative supply, so we confirm the local position before drilling rather than assuming it. Separately, the National Water Act governs how much you may abstract. Reasonable domestic use and small-scale garden watering generally fall under Schedule 1 and need no licence or registration, but taking more than 10 cubic metres a day from groundwater on a property must be registered, and irrigation or commercial volumes usually require registration or a water use authorisation from the Department of Water and Sanitation.

Borehole Prices in Port St Johns

Drilling is charged per metre, so depth drives the total. The ranges below are framed for local ground conditions and access.

ItemIndicative rangeWhat moves it locally
Drilling, per metreR500 - R1,150 /mQuartz arenite is competent and drills cleanly. Dwyka tillite where present is hard and slow.
uPVC casing, installed, per metreR400 - R760 /mThe sandstone is largely self-supporting, so casing is mostly through the weathered cap and regolith.
Mobilisation and site establishmentR4,000 - R18,000Access, distance and site conditions move this; a site visit settles it before quoting.
Water surveyR5,000 - R12,000Targets structure rather than depth. Worth most where yield is fracture-dependent.
Yield testingR3,500 - R15,000Establishes the sustainable rate that pump selection depends on.
Pump, supplied and installedR15,000 - R45,000Greater depth means more head, which means a larger pump and heavier cable.
Storage and boosterR12,000 - R35,000Needed wherever peak demand exceeds the borehole's sustainable rate.
Typical complete projectR75,000 - R195,000+Everything above, excluding treatment, which depends entirely on the water analysis.

These are indicative ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African supplier and contractor pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not our rate card, and no figure here is a commitment.

Treat them as a broad guide only. Published borehole pricing in South Africa varies enormously - different 2026 guides quote per-metre drilling rates for the same province that differ by a factor of three - because depth, geology, access, specification, distance and fuel costs all move the number. Depth in particular is not known until the hole is finished. Figures generally exclude VAT unless noted, and change over time. Only an itemised written quote against your actual site means anything.

Port St Johns Borehole FAQs

Should I drill into the river alluvium here?

If your property is on the flats, it is usually the cheaper option and yields can be good.

Quality is the trade-off. Alluvial water beside a river draining a large catchment needs proper bacteriological and chemical testing before it is used for drinking.

Can a guest house rely on a borehole?

Many here do, because municipal supply is not always dependable and the season brings sharp peaks.

Storage is what carries a busy weekend. Size the tank from the tested daily yield rather than sizing the pump to the peak tap demand.

Is Port St Johns better for boreholes than the rest of the Eastern Cape?

Generally yes, and measurably so. The Msikaba Formation outperforms the Karoo rock to the west, recharge here runs at 10 to 12 per cent of rainfall against 2 to 7 in the Karoo, and several of the province's record yields have been drilled on it.

Yields are still fracture-dependent, and the productive zones concentrate along dolerite dykes, so siting still decides the individual result.

Why does bacterial testing matter at Port St Johns?

Because high rainfall and a shallow water table mean surface conditions reach groundwater quickly, particularly where sanitation sits close by.

The test is inexpensive and disinfection is straightforward to fit. On good-yielding ground like this it would be a shame to lose the benefit to something so easily checked.
