Qumbu sits in the Mhlontlo district on Beaufort Group ground with dolerite, on the inland route between Mthatha and Mount Frere.
A rural service town where community schemes and homestead supply account for most of the drilling.
What Is Under Qumbu
The formations below are what a rig actually meets on a Qumbu property, and between them they govern the depth, the casing requirement and what the hole will realistically give you.
| Formation | Where it sits | What it means for drilling |
|---|---|---|
| Beaufort Group, Adelaide Subgroup | The southern and coastal Transkei belt | Mudstone and sandstone forming combined fractured and intergranular aquifers, modest on their own. |
| Molteno and Elliot Formations | Rising toward Cala, Elliot and the northern uplands | Sandstone-bearing and a better prospect than the mudstone below, with the Molteno the stronger of the two. |
| Jurassic dolerite dykes and sills | Throughout the sequence | The controlling feature. Size, orientation and degree of weathering of the intrusion govern storage and flow, and the baked contact is the target. |

- Identifying a productive site here is genuinely difficult, and the literature says so. Many holes in this belt have come up dry or barely productive, which is the honest case for paying for a survey rather than drilling on a guess.
- Magnetic and resistivity surveys are the standard tools, because the dolerite is magnetically distinct from the sediment around it. That is a real technical advantage in this ground.
- Ecca Group rock is the poor relation, and where dolerite sheets sit on top of it they can reduce recharge as well. A sheet intersected at around thirty metres with no water is a known outcome here.

What to Watch For Here
Yields across the district are modest, so storage and a tested sustainable rate carry more weight than the figure a driller sees on the day.
Road access in the wet season affects both the mobilisation cost and whether the rig arrives in the window you booked.
What the Water Is Used For
- Stock watering and animal supply
- Orchard, vegetable and pasture irrigation
- Stable, shed and equipment washdown
- Household supply where the analysis allows it
- Fire water and standby storage
Wellpoint or Borehole?
No. Hard rock under a thick weathered regolith, with no unconsolidated sand aquifer inland. The coastal river mouths at Centane, Willowvale and Mqanduli are the only marginal exceptions.
Water Quality in Qumbu
The practical local screen is conductivity, dissolved solids, fluoride and iron, and iron, manganese and fluoride are the characteristic natural issues in this stratigraphy. The bigger day-to-day risk is microbiological: testing of spring sources in this region found coliforms and E. coli at every site, attributed to shared human and livestock use. A properly sealed, cased borehole is the honest answer to that problem, which is much of the point of drilling one.
A water analysis is what turns that from a general expectation into a number for your specific hole, and treatment should be specified against the result rather than against the area's reputation.
Registration and Abstraction
Groundwater itself is regulated nationally rather than municipally, and we could not find a published borehole by-law for this district municipality. As the water services authority it can still require approval before a property draws on an alternative supply, so we confirm the local position before drilling rather than assuming it. Separately, the National Water Act governs how much you may abstract. Reasonable domestic use and small-scale garden watering generally fall under Schedule 1 and need no licence or registration, but taking more than 10 cubic metres a day from groundwater on a property must be registered, and irrigation or commercial volumes usually require registration or a water use authorisation from the Department of Water and Sanitation.

Borehole Prices in Qumbu
Drilling is charged per metre, so depth drives the total. The ranges below are framed for local ground conditions and access.
| Item | Indicative range | What moves it locally |
|---|---|---|
| Drilling, per metre | R500 - R1,200 /m | Mudstone drills reasonably, dolerite slowly. The weathered regolith is thick in this high-rainfall belt. |
| uPVC casing, installed, per metre | R400 - R780 /m | A real casing run through thick weathered mudstone and regolith, which is what keeps the hole clean and stable. |
| Mobilisation and site establishment | R4,000 - R20,000 | Access, distance and site conditions move this; a site visit settles it before quoting. |
| Water survey | R5,000 - R12,000 | Targets structure rather than depth. Worth most where yield is fracture-dependent. |
| Yield testing | R3,500 - R15,000 | Establishes the sustainable rate that pump selection depends on. |
| Pump, supplied and installed | R15,000 - R45,000 | Greater depth means more head, which means a larger pump and heavier cable. |
| Storage and booster | R12,000 - R35,000 | Needed wherever peak demand exceeds the borehole's sustainable rate. |
| Typical complete project | R80,000 - R210,000+ | Everything above, excluding treatment, which depends entirely on the water analysis. |
These are indicative ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African supplier and contractor pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not our rate card, and no figure here is a commitment.
Treat them as a broad guide only. Published borehole pricing in South Africa varies enormously - different 2026 guides quote per-metre drilling rates for the same province that differ by a factor of three - because depth, geology, access, specification, distance and fuel costs all move the number. Depth in particular is not known until the hole is finished. Figures generally exclude VAT unless noted, and change over time. Only an itemised written quote against your actual site means anything.
Qumbu Borehole FAQs
What is a realistic yield around Qumbu?
Modest. Enough for a homestead, stock and a garden from a well-sited hole, with storage doing much of the work.
Expecting irrigation volumes from Beaufort country is where disappointment comes from, not from the drilling itself.
Can several households share one borehole?
Commonly, and it is often the sensible answer here. A shared hole with communal storage spreads both the cost and the modest yield.
It needs sizing from total daily demand across everyone connected, and an agreement about who maintains the pump.
Why do so many boreholes near Qumbu disappoint?
Because the host rock is close to a non-aquifer and the dolerite contacts are narrow targets. The hydrogeological literature on this region describes identifying productive sites as very difficult.
A surveyed hole and a convenient hole are two different propositions here. The magnetic signature of dolerite makes it findable, which is exactly why the survey is worth its fee.
Is spring water or borehole water better around Qumbu?
A properly constructed borehole, by some margin. Testing of springs in this region has found coliform and E. coli contamination at every site sampled, because people and livestock share the same source and runoff reaches it directly.
A sealed, cased borehole draws from below that contamination. It is one of the strongest practical arguments for drilling here rather than relying on a spring.
