Louis Trichardt sits at the foot of the Soutpansberg, where the range's sandstone and volcanic rock meets the basement country to the south.
The mountain makes the difference here: rainfall on the range recharges the fractured rock on the footslopes below it.
What Is Under Louis Trichardt
The formations below are what a rig actually meets on a Louis Trichardt property, and between them they govern the depth, the casing requirement and what the hole will realistically give you.
| Formation | Where it sits | What it means for drilling |
|---|---|---|
| Wyllies Poort Formation quartzite and sandstone | The high ground of the Soutpansberg range | Hard, competent quartzite that stands open well. Fractured aquifer, and the source of the freshest water in the province with median conductivity around 19 millisiemens per metre. |
| Sibasa Formation basalt | The eastern Soutpansberg around Sibasa and Thohoyandou | Amygdaloidal lava, usually highly weathered, which gives it both intergranular and fracture character. Deep weathering means a longer casing run and a collapse risk. |
| Limpopo Belt gneisses and Karoo rocks | The plains around Musina and Alldays, and the Tshipise basin | Weathered-and-fractured basement and Karoo sediment. Salinity climbs sharply here, with conductivity medians from 89 up to 156 millisiemens per metre. |

Get a Louis Trichardt Borehole QuoteWhat That Means for Your Borehole
- Structure decides everything, and the local record proves it: fracture zones near the Taaibos fault are high-yielding and supply villages as far as Alldays, the Tshipise fault has been drilled successfully, and the Bosbokpoort fault was drilled and found no water.
- Dolerite and diabase dykes generally disappoint here, which is the opposite of the Karoo rule. Dykes near the Taaibos fault gave poor results, though collapsible dykes can give high blow yields and then need casing.
- Rainfall varies almost four-fold within this district, from over a thousand millimetres a year at Thohoyandou to about 280 at Musina. That gap shows up in both recharge and water quality.

What to Watch For Here
Footslope properties below the Soutpansberg are among the better prospects in the province, because mountain rainfall feeds the fractured rock below.
Yields drop away from the range, so a property on the flats south of town is a different proposition to one against the mountain.
What the Water Is Used For
- Crop, vineyard and orchard irrigation
- Stock watering across camps
- Packhouse, cellar and equipment washdown
- Frost protection and establishment watering
- Household and worker housing supply
Wellpoint or Borehole?
Yes on the Limpopo, Luvuvhu and Mutale river alluvium, which reaches about 45 metres thick along the Luvuvhu and is already heavily used for agriculture. Not on the mountain and not on the gneiss plains. One trap worth knowing: the general authorisation excludes alluvial aquifers directly connected to a stream from the definition of a groundwater resource, and abstraction within 100 metres of a watercourse's riparian edge needs a licence regardless of volume. A shallow hole or a wellpoint in live river sand is therefore a licence question, not a registration one, even at modest volumes.
Water Quality in Louis Trichardt
The Soutpansberg sandstones give the freshest water in Limpopo, with 98 per cent of Sibasa Formation samples in the ideal conductivity range. Off the mountain, salinity rises sharply through the gneiss units. The real issue in this district is nitrate rather than fluoride: a study of 17 boreholes in the Thohoyandou area found nitrate from 7 to 163 milligrams per litre with most boreholes above the 50 milligram guideline, attributed to agriculture and to pit latrines sited near boreholes, while fluoride was comfortably within limits.
A water analysis is what turns that from a general expectation into a number for your specific hole, and treatment should be specified against the result rather than against the area's reputation.
Registration and Abstraction
Registration for water use in Limpopo sits with the Department of Water and Sanitation through its national registration system, not with the municipality. We could not find a published municipal borehole by-law anywhere in the province, so we do not claim one exists. What municipalities do enforce is the prohibition on cross-connecting a borehole to the municipal reticulation, and their ordinary building and planning rules. Separately, the National Water Act governs how much you may abstract. Reasonable domestic use and small-scale garden watering generally fall under Schedule 1 and need no licence or registration, but taking more than 10 cubic metres a day from groundwater on a property must be registered, and irrigation or commercial volumes usually require registration or a water use authorisation from the Department of Water and Sanitation.

Borehole Prices in Louis Trichardt (Makhado)
Drilling is charged per metre, so depth drives the total. The ranges below are framed for local ground conditions and access.
| Item | Indicative range | What moves it locally |
|---|---|---|
| Drilling, per metre | R500 - R1,200 /m | Wyllies Poort quartzite is hard and slow. Weathered Sibasa basalt drills more easily but needs more casing. |
| uPVC casing, installed, per metre | R420 - R800 /m | A long run through deeply weathered basalt, and through collapsible dyke material where that is intersected. |
| Mobilisation and site establishment | R3,000 - R18,000 | Access, distance and site conditions move this; a site visit settles it before quoting. |
| Water survey | R5,000 - R12,000 | Targets structure rather than depth. Worth most where yield is fracture-dependent. |
| Yield testing | R3,500 - R15,000 | Establishes the sustainable rate that pump selection depends on. |
| Pump, supplied and installed | R15,000 - R45,000 | Greater depth means more head, which means a larger pump and heavier cable. |
| Storage and booster | R12,000 - R35,000 | Needed wherever peak demand exceeds the borehole's sustainable rate. |
| Typical complete project | R75,000 - R200,000+ | Everything above, excluding treatment, which depends entirely on the water analysis. |
These are indicative ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African supplier and contractor pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not our rate card, and no figure here is a commitment.
Treat them as a broad guide only. Published borehole pricing in South Africa varies enormously - different 2026 guides quote per-metre drilling rates for the same province that differ by a factor of three - because depth, geology, access, specification, distance and fuel costs all move the number. Depth in particular is not known until the hole is finished. Figures generally exclude VAT unless noted, and change over time. Only an itemised written quote against your actual site means anything.
Louis Trichardt (Makhado) Borehole FAQs
Does the Soutpansberg improve groundwater here?
Substantially. The range receives far more rainfall than the surrounding country and that recharge feeds the fractured sandstone and volcanic rock on its footslopes.
It is one of the better groundwater settings in Limpopo, though yields still depend on intersecting fractures.
Is the town called Louis Trichardt or Makhado?
Both names are in use. The renaming to Makhado was legally contested and the position has shifted more than once, so both appear on signage, in addresses and in daily speech.
This page carries them together for that reason.
Is Louis Trichardt water quality good?
The Soutpansberg sandstones give the freshest groundwater in Limpopo, and 98 per cent of Sibasa Formation samples fall in the ideal conductivity range.
The catch is nitrate, not salinity. A study of boreholes in this area found most exceeding the 50 milligram guideline, traced to agriculture and to pit latrines sited too close to boreholes. Fluoride, unusually for Limpopo, was fine.
Does the mountain make a difference to groundwater here?
A substantial one. Rainfall ranges from over a thousand millimetres a year on the range to around 280 at Musina, and recharge follows it.
Fracture zones along the major faults are the productive targets. Dolerite dykes, which work well in the Karoo, have generally disappointed in this district.
