Groblersdal sits in the Loskop irrigation district on the Olifants River, on Transvaal Supergroup and Bushveld ground.

An irrigation economy fed mainly by the Loskop canal, with groundwater as a supplement rather than the main supply.

What Is Under Groblersdal

The formations below are what a rig actually meets on a Groblersdal property, and between them they govern the depth, the casing requirement and what the hole will realistically give you.

FormationWhere it sitsWhat it means for drilling
Malmani Subgroup dolomiteThe eastern Sekhukhune margin toward Abel Erasmus Pass and the Echo CavesKarstic and by far the best aquifer in the district: around half of boreholes exceed 5 litres per second, and in one eastern dataset only three of 84 holes were dry.
Pretoria Group quartzite, shale and andesite, and Rooiberg felsiteMuch of the district around Lebowakgomo and Jane FurseCombined intergranular and fractured, with dominant yields of a tenth to five litres per second. The purely fractured portion medians only a tenth to half a litre.
Marble Hall Fragment, and Olifants river alluviumAround Marble Hall, and along the Olifants and Elands channelsThe Marble Hall carbonate was metamorphosed by the Bushveld intrusion to marble and calc-silicate and has lost much of its karst permeability. The river alluvium, by contrast, seldom gives under 5 litres per second.

What That Means for Your Borehole

  • Dolomite needs a different drilling protocol, because cavities cause loss of circulation and sudden rod drops. Casing through the overburden and any cavity zone is essential, and this is the formation associated with sinkhole risk nationally.
  • The name Marble Hall is misleading about the water. The carbonate there is metamorphosed marble rather than fresh Malmani dolomite, so it does not deliver karst yields. Do not budget on the strength of the town's name.
  • Karst water is excellent and extremely vulnerable, with chloride, sulphate and nitrate varying so widely in dolomite analyses that the water department reads it as a contamination signature. Conduits move surface contamination fast.

Where We Work Around Groblersdal

  • Groblersdal town and the central area
  • The Loskop irrigation scheme and canals
  • The Olifants River valley
  • Marble Hall and Roossenekal approaches
  • Citrus, vegetable, grain and tobacco farms
  • Packhouses and agricultural industry

What to Watch For Here

The Olifants catchment carries documented upstream contamination, from mining and industry further up, which matters for surface water and for shallow groundwater connected to it.

Established irrigation across the district means a new hole competes with existing abstraction, so a current tested rate beats a historic reference.

What the Water Is Used For

  • Crop, vineyard and orchard irrigation
  • Stock watering across camps
  • Packhouse, cellar and equipment washdown
  • Frost protection and establishment watering
  • Household and worker housing supply

Wellpoint or Borehole?

Yes on the Olifants river alluvium around Marble Hall and Groblersdal, where yields seldom fall below 5 litres per second and quality is good. Not on the dolomite, the Pretoria Group or the Bushveld rock. One trap worth knowing: the general authorisation excludes alluvial aquifers directly connected to a stream from the definition of a groundwater resource, and abstraction within 100 metres of a watercourse's riparian edge needs a licence regardless of volume. A shallow hole or a wellpoint in live river sand is therefore a licence question, not a registration one, even at modest volumes.

Water Quality in Groblersdal

Dolomite water averages around 63 millisiemens per metre with nitrate and fluoride within limits, but the variability is the story: coefficients of variation above 200 per cent for chloride, sulphate and nitrate are read as a contamination signature in karst. At catchment scale the issues are secondary salinisation from irrigation return flows in the Loskop scheme, pesticide residues including elevated DDT at several sites, and phosphate from non-compliant wastewater works. Acid mine drainage in the Olifants is confined to the upper Mpumalanga reaches, not here.

A water analysis is what turns that from a general expectation into a number for your specific hole, and treatment should be specified against the result rather than against the area's reputation.

Registration and Abstraction

Registration for water use in Limpopo sits with the Department of Water and Sanitation through its national registration system, not with the municipality. We could not find a published municipal borehole by-law anywhere in the province, so we do not claim one exists. What municipalities do enforce is the prohibition on cross-connecting a borehole to the municipal reticulation, and their ordinary building and planning rules. Separately, the National Water Act governs how much you may abstract. Reasonable domestic use and small-scale garden watering generally fall under Schedule 1 and need no licence or registration, but taking more than 10 cubic metres a day from groundwater on a property must be registered, and irrigation or commercial volumes usually require registration or a water use authorisation from the Department of Water and Sanitation.

Borehole Prices in Groblersdal

Drilling is charged per metre, so depth drives the total. The ranges below are framed for local ground conditions and access.

ItemIndicative rangeWhat moves it locally
Drilling, per metreR500 - R1,250 /mDolomite drills quickly until it does not: cavities cause circulation loss and rod drops, which is time and risk rather than metres.
uPVC casing, installed, per metreR450 - R850 /mOn dolomite this is the critical item. Casing through overburden and any cavity zone is what keeps the hole from becoming a ground-stability problem.
Mobilisation and site establishmentR3,000 - R15,000Access, distance and site conditions move this; a site visit settles it before quoting.
Water surveyR5,000 - R12,000Targets structure rather than depth. Worth most where yield is fracture-dependent.
Yield testingR3,500 - R15,000Establishes the sustainable rate that pump selection depends on.
Pump, supplied and installedR15,000 - R45,000Greater depth means more head, which means a larger pump and heavier cable.
Storage and boosterR12,000 - R35,000Needed wherever peak demand exceeds the borehole's sustainable rate.
Typical complete projectR75,000 - R215,000+Everything above, excluding treatment, which depends entirely on the water analysis.

These are indicative ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African supplier and contractor pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not our rate card, and no figure here is a commitment.

Treat them as a broad guide only. Published borehole pricing in South Africa varies enormously - different 2026 guides quote per-metre drilling rates for the same province that differ by a factor of three - because depth, geology, access, specification, distance and fuel costs all move the number. Depth in particular is not known until the hole is finished. Figures generally exclude VAT unless noted, and change over time. Only an itemised written quote against your actual site means anything.

Groblersdal Borehole FAQs

Does Olifants River pollution affect boreholes here?

It is a real concern for surface water in this catchment, and shallow groundwater closely connected to the river can reflect it.

A full chemical analysis is the sensible baseline for any hole near the river, particularly one intended for household supply rather than irrigation.

Is groundwater or canal water better here?

Most farms here run primarily on the canal allocation, with groundwater for continuity, stock and household supply.

A borehole earns its place when the allocation is short, which is exactly when everyone else wants one too. Planning ahead matters.

Is there dolomite under Groblersdal?

Real Malmani dolomite sits along the eastern margin of this district, toward Abel Erasmus Pass and the Echo Caves, and where it is present it is the best aquifer around: about half of boreholes exceed 5 litres per second.

Around Marble Hall itself the carbonate is a Transvaal inlier that the Bushveld intrusion metamorphosed to marble and calc-silicate, and it has lost much of its karst permeability. The town's name is not a promise of yield.

Why does dolomite need special care?

Because it dissolves along fractures over geological time, leaving cavities and variable ground. Drilling into that without assessing it first risks losing circulation, dropping rods, or creating a stability problem at surface.

It is also the formation associated with sinkhole risk in South Africa. The ground assessment and a proper casing and sealing specification are what make it safe, and a quote that ignores them is worth questioning.
